Most frequent lemma

Not glamorous. Absolutely essential. The Greek article does a ton of grammatical work. Learn it early and half the sentence starts confessing its structure.

How to use this list

Definitions are useful. Uses are where the Bible opens up.

1. Learn the function words first

Articles, pronouns, conjunctions, particles, and prepositions look small, but they hold the sentence together. Skip them and you miss the logic.

2. Do not worship one-word glosses

A gloss is a doorway, not the room. Words like λόγος, πίστις, κόσμος, and βασιλεία need context before they need a sermon illustration.

3. Practice recognition

Click the flashcards, say the transliteration, name the basic use, then look for the word in real verses.

Source note: Frequency counts were generated from MorphGNT SBLGNT lemma data and cross-checked against public NT Greek frequency references. The definitions and use notes below are our own beginner-focused teaching glosses, written for searchers and Bible readers, not copied lexicon entries.

FAQ

Common questions about high-frequency NT Greek words

What is the most common Greek word in the New Testament?

The definite article is the most common lemma. It appears in many forms and tells you case, gender, and number.

Should beginners memorize these first?

Yes. High-frequency words give the most reading leverage. They show up constantly in actual New Testament sentences.

Why include tiny words like καί and δέ?

Because they control flow, contrast, logic, and emphasis. Tiny words steer big arguments. Rude but true.

Is this a substitute for a lexicon?

No. This is a beginner-friendly frequency guide. Use it for recognition and study, then use a lexicon for deeper word-by-word work.
